Building prototype

THE Landesgartenschau Exhibition Hall is a permanent, and thus fully enclosed, insulated and waterproof building prototype whose primary structure has been robotically fabricated from regionally sourced beech plywood (Figure 8.1). Following an integrative design approach that involved all stakeholders from the very start of the project, an extraordinarily lightweight timber plate structure was achieved with a structural shell thickness of only 50mm. The project is the outcome of the EU-funded collaborative research project ‘Robotics in Timber Construction’ and is specifically aimed at a knowledge transfer from research into practice.1
